"A Bug's Life" Continues To Fly High With $150 Million Gross At The Domestic Box Office
In just 61 days of national
release, "A Bug's Life," a Walt Disney Pictures presentation
of a Pixar Film, has reached the $150 million gross revenues mark at the
domestic box office, it was announced today (1/26) by Peter Schneider,
president of The Walt Disney Studios, and Steve Jobs, chairman and CEO
of Pixar Animation Studios. This spectacular achievement makes it the
fourth biggest grossing animated feature of all time behind "The
Lion King" ($313 million), "Aladdin" ($217 million) and
"Toy Story" ($192 million). "A Bug's Life" is the
second consecutive release from Disney and Pixar to join the exclusive
$150 million club. The film, which opened nationwide on November 25th,
grossed $2,720,616 this past weekend (1/22-24/99) and crossed the $150
million milestone on Saturday.
Commenting on the announcement,
Jobs said, "John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton have created a magical
animated film that is enormously satisfying to audiences. This is a very
proud moment for all of us at Pixar and we feel that the film represents
an ideal combination of state-of-the-art technology, great artistry and
exceptional storytelling. With "Toy Story 2" scheduled for release
this Thanksgiving, it is shaping up to be an incredible time for our studio."
Pixar Animation Studios combines
creative and technical artistry to create original characters and stories
in the new medium of computer animation. Pixar created and produced the
first computer-animated feature film, the Academy Award winning "Toy
Story", and in 1997 entered into an equal partnership with The Walt
Disney Company to finance, produce, and distribute five computer-animated
feature films and related products. Pixar's stock is traded on the Nasdaq
National Market under the symbol PIXR.
