Widescreen and DVD Debut

In An Unprecedented Move, Disney Offers Four Separate Video Packages Featuring Individual Characters--Flik, Dot, Francis and Heimlich

BURBANK, Calif., (January 29, 1999) - The heartwarming and hilarious $152 million box office phenomenon, A BUG'S LIFE, will make its highly-anticipated video debut on April 20, 1999, it was announced today by Thomas Schumacher, President of Walt Disney Feature Animation, Steve Jobs, Chairman and CEO of Pixar and Pixar's John Lasseter, Director/Writer of A BUG'S LIFE. In a Disney first for an animated movie, the Company will debut the VHS widescreen and DVD versions of the film day-and-date with the video release. In another first, A BUG'S LIFE video will be showcased in four different packages, each featuring one of the following beloved characters: Flik, the story's "ant"-i-hero; Dot, the colony's youngest ant; Francis, the un-lady-like ladybug, and Heimlich, the film's hilarious, overindulgent caterpillar. In addition, this release will enable families to view, together for the first time, both sets of the hilarious animated actor out-takes that originally kept theater audiences glued to their seats during the film's end credits. A BUG'S LIFE is priced to own at $26.99 (SRP) for VHS and $34.99 (SRP) for DVD.

In an industry first, A BUG'S LIFE will become the first film to be digitally transferred directly from the original computer imagery rather than through the standard film-to-videotape process. Since A BUG'S LIFE was created entirely in a digital format, this process presents the movie with the most pristine images possible. It also permitted the Directors to re-frame the entire widescreen film for the best presentation possible on television screens.

After soaring to "infinity and beyond" with the landmark 1995 computer-animated box office smash, "Toy Story," two-time Academy Award‰-winning* director John Lasseter, Disney Feature Animation and Pixar Animation Studios zoom down to earth and below for an exciting new adventure filled with fun and fantasy in their groundbreaking second feature, A BUG'S LIFE. Bringing to life a spectacular and breathtaking "epic of miniature proportions," the film presents a three-dimensional world only three inches high, that is so real that audiences can feel the sunlight filter through a blade of grass. With its unique blend of outrageous comedy, heartwarming characters and dazzling visual displays, A BUG'S LIFE ranks as one of the most entertaining and inventive family film in years.

A BUG'S LIFE tells the story of a band of greedy grasshoppers, led by the ominous Hopper, who, each summer, descend upon an ant colony to demand a hefty portion of their hard-earned harvest. The film's hero, Flik, an inventive worker ant, builds a harvesting contraption to help increase food production, but instead it runs out of control and destroys the ants' food offering to the grasshoppers. When Hopper arrives, he is furious with the colony's apparent lack of progress and demands "twice" the food "by the time the last leaf falls"…or else. Flik takes it upon himself to get outside help and unkowingly enlists an unemployed troupe of bug performers >from a second-rate flea circus to join the fight against the grasshoppers. Working together in their new found friendship, the ants and the circus bugs prepare for a climactic confrontation. When Flik's plan starts to unravel, the action and comedy turn fast and furious as he attempts to save the colony as well as his reputation.

The film features a cast of top vocal talents that bring personality and fun to the entertaining ensemble of insect characters. Dave Foley ( "NewsRadio" "Kids In The Hall,") gives an outstanding performance as the unconventional Flik, while Academy-Award‰ winner Kevin Spacey (1996 "Best Supporting Actor" for "The Usual Suspects") leaps off the screen as the menacing grasshopper leader, Hopper. Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Seinfeld") portrays Princess Atta, the future queen of the anthill, and irrepressible comedienne Phyllis Diller gives a royal performance as the retiring Queen of the colony. Richard Kind ("Spin City") adds bounce to the voice of Molt, Hopper's senseless sibling, who's always getting under his brother's "exoskeleton." Adding variety and vitality to the colorful cast of circus bugs is John Ratzenberger, ("Cheers") who delivers a three-ring performance as the sleazy flea circus owner, P.T. Flea.

Jonathan Harris ("Lost in Space") provides the overly theatrical and self-absorbed vocal persona of Manny, the pompous praying mantis magician, with Madeline Kahn as the voice of Gypsy, Manny's long-suffering moth mate. Comedian Denis Leary sounds off as Francis, a male ladybug who displays an oversized chip on his shoulder when mistaken for the female of the species. Supplying the voice of Slim, the intellectual walking stick who laments being cast as a clown is David Hyde Pierce ("Frazier"). Veteran animation storyman Joe Ranft is the voice of Heimlich, the caterpillar clown; and comedienne Bonnie Hunt lends her voice to Rosie, the big-hearted black widow spider who tames a not-so-ferocious rhino beetle named Dim, voiced by Brad Garrett ("Everybody Loves Raymond"). Michael McShane, ("Tucker-The Man and his Dream") pulls double duty as the voices of Tuck and Roll, the gibberish spouting twin Hungarian pill bugs who are ready to perform at the drop of a match. The late Roddy McDowall takes a final bow as the voice of the council ant and the resident thespian, Mr. Soil.

All formats of A BUG'S LIFE also include Pixar's GERI'S GAME, the 1997 Academy-Award‰ Winner for "Best Animated Short Film." The film tells the tale of an elderly man who passes the time by playing chess by himself in the park. All's well until Geri walks over to the other side of the table to play the black chess pieces and the mean, ultra-competitive part of his nature takes charge. With GERI'S GAME, Pixar has developed a new advanced technology to dramatically enhance animated cloth and facial expressions in service of great storytelling.

A BUG'S LIFE is rated "G" by the Motion Picture Association of America and has a running time of 94 minutes. It is presented in Digitally-Mastered Hi-Fi Stereo Surround Sound and is close-captioned for the hearing impaired.

Walt Disney Home Video is distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Inc., the recognized industry leader for eleven consecutive years.

*1996 "Special Achievement Award" for TOY STORY and 1989 "Best Animated Short Film" for TINY TOY.
