Disney/Pixar’s Monster Day One Sales!
Disney/Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. – 5 Million Units Sold First Day
BURBANK, Calif., September
18, 2002 – On its first day of availability, Disney/Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. sold 5 million units on DVD and video
in North America. It was announced today by Steve Jobs, Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer of Pixar Animation Studios (Nasdaq: PIXR), and Michael Eisner,
Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. The 5 million units sold now has Monsters, Inc. topping the previous
record of first day sales held by Disney’s The Lion King at 4.5 million units. Based on this first day sales figure
alone, Monsters, Inc. is anticipated
to be one of the best-selling DVDs and videos of the year.
Commenting on this exciting
achievement, Jobs said, “We're thrilled! Pixar and Disney, pulled out all of the stops on this one - with the new
animated short Mike’s New Car, the
unique Human and Monster worlds on the DVD, and the stunning image quality that
results from being completely digital from computer to DVD.”
Eisner commented, “This
tremendous response validates the innovative blend of creativity and technology
that went into making the greatest DVD possible from a critically acclaimed
film. There is something for everyone on this DVD, making it a must-have for
anyone's library.”
President of Buena Vista
Home Entertainment, Bob Chapek added, “We couldn’t be happier that the public
has embraced the Monsters, Inc. DVD
and video in this tremendous way. The DVD is truly a breakthrough product for the industry that pushed the
technology to a whole new level.” Commenting on the first day sales record, Chapek added, “We are thrilled
with the day one results, but we have no expectations to necessarily beat The Lion King in terms of ultimate
sales. However, with the tremendous
support by both retail and consumers this new day one record reinforces the love
that consumers have held for this magnificent film.”
