Disney/Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. Breaks One Week DVD Industry Record

11 Million DVD/VHS Copies in One Week of Sales

BURBANK, Calif., September 24, 2002 - In one week of sales, Disney/Pixar's Monsters, Inc. has sold 11 million DVD and videocassette units in the United States and Canada and has shattered every DVD-era home entertainment industry sales record, it was announced today by Steve Jobs, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pixar Animation Studios (Nasdaq: PIXR), and Michael Eisner, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. Only the Lion King in its 1995 pre DVD-era release, has sold more units in its first week of sales.

On September 18, Buena Vista Home Entertainment proudly reported that the 5 million DVD and videocassette copies sold of Monsters, Inc. topped the industry one day sales record previously reported at 4.5 million units. Despite being released during the typical industry Tuesday release pattern, Monsters, Inc. then went on to sell 7.5 million units within its first three days of sales (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) to eclipse the DVD-era industry three day record previously reported at 7.0 million DVD and videocassette units. In addition, the 11 million combined DVD and videocassette sales propels Monsters, Inc. above the current week one sales record, which has been reported at 10 million combined units. On DVD, Monsters, Inc. has gone on to become the fastest selling title ever, topping sales of 7 million DVD units in its first week of sales.

Commenting on this exciting accomplishment, Jobs said, "Breaking the one week record is a tribute to the team that made this extraordinary film; its truly gratifying to have 11 million people invite Mike and Sulley into their homes during the first week."

Eisner commented, "We couldn't be happier at the incredible response to Monsters, Inc. It's a great film, and it shows that with the right story, inspired people and a lot of hard work, you really can create magic. Everyone at Disney and Pixar can be proud of the success of this film."

President of Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Bob Chapek added, "Our research indicated that consumers were very excited about Monsters, Inc. But, no amount of research could have ever predicted this type of overwhelming response. As a result, we are working diligently to keep retail stores in stock given the huge consumer demand."

Nominated for four Academy Awards®* including "Best Animated Feature Film," Monsters, Inc. has become the second highest-grossing animated film in box-office history. The 2-disc DVD and VHS features an all-new animated short film "Mike's New Car" created exclusively for this Monsters, Inc. release (with the voices of John Goodman and Billy Crystal); the uproarious, Academy Award®-winning Pixar short film For the Birds (Best Animated Short Film, 2001); hysterical outtakes including a hilarious "Company Play" musical performance by the Monsters, Inc. characters; an exclusive look at the exciting upcoming feature film Finding Nemo, a Walt Disney Pictures presentation of a Pixar Animation Studios film, and much, much more.
